A spinal disc herniation, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc is a condition in which the soft inner material of a spinal disc bulges out through a tear in the outer layer. This can put pressure on surrounding nerves, causing pain, numbness, and weakness in the arms or legs. Slipped discs are most common in the lower back, but can also occur in the neck. The condition is often the result of aging, repeated heavy lifting, or injury to the spine. Treatment for a slipped disc may include physical therapy, pain medication, and in severe cases, surgery to remove the damaged disc and relieve pressure on the nerves.
